Hope F22 flat pedals review

A decade on from the launch of its popular F20 flat pedal, Hope has released an update on that successful formula.

CNC-machined in Lancashire, the F22s boast a redesigned platform that’s larger and more concave than the Hope F20.

As you’d expect from Hope components, they’re fully user-serviceable, with spare parts available so you can rebuild them when necessary.

The new pedals are offered in a range of six anodised colours – red, orange, blue, purple, silver and black.

With a usable platform size of 105x102mm, the F22s are still considerably smaller than some other flat pedals. This may cause problems for those with larger feet, potentially reducing grip and increasing foot fatigue.

The size was bang-on for my UK size 7.5 feet, leaving them feeling firmly planted and not causing any ‘clawing’ around the pedal. However, I wouldn’t want to go any smaller.

The asymmetric shape of these mountain bike pedals is designed to give greater clearance on tight and rutty trails. I found they brushed off ground strikes with ease.

While the F22s have a concave profile to help cup your feet – with a depth of 17mm at the edges and 14mm in the centre – I felt this could be more pronounced, to give even more security.

Hope has paid particular attention to pin placement and size. Each side has four 4mm pins near the axle and seven 6mm ones on the outer edge, which can be shortened to 5mm using the supplied washers.

I opted to run them at full length to give the pedals a more concave feel. The pins are reverse-loading for security and ease of removal, and have a hexagonal base, which should make them easy to get out even if the Allen heads get damaged.

Even on the roughest trails in the Lake District, the pins provided plenty of traction and I never had a problem with my feet flying off the pedals mid-descent. It enabled me to focus on the riding without worrying about what was going on ‘below stairs’.

The internals are largely unchanged, although the axle – which spins on cartridge bearings and an IGUS bushing – has been strengthened.

I found it straightforward to remove, clean and re-grease, so keeping on top of servicing these pedals shouldn’t be a problem.

It remains to be seen how the F22s perform in terms of longevity, but the three seals have done their job of keeping dirt and debris at bay throughout testing.

For those with smaller feet or who prefer a more compact platform, these are secure-feeling pedals that are fully serviceable.

The F22s appear to be built for the long haul too, making them well worth the expense.
